Book Description

GREEN HILLS OF AFRICA by Ernest Hemingway. Decorations by Edward Shenton. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1935. Flatsigned by the author in blue ink with a presentation salutation which reads "With Best Wishes, Ernest Hemingway." This is a First State, First Printing as established by the printed "A" on copyright page as well as the Scribner Press colophon. The pricing of "$2.75" (originally printed at the top of the front dust jacket flap) was trimmed due to this signed first edition being presented as a gift. The book measures 6.0"x8.5"x1.5" and has 295 profusely illustrated pages. This is Hemingway's classic account of his adventures while on safari in Africa.

The first printing was published on October 25, 1935 and was priced at $2.75. The first printing consisted of only 10,550 copies. This book is a verified first printing, with "1935" printed on both the title and copyright pages and the required "A" and Seal (colophon) located on the copyright page.

Book Condition

This GREEN HILLS OF AFRICA has no interior marks or writing other than that of the author as seen in the above photographs which are representative of all 295 pages. The hardbound book is in Very Good+/Fine condition, with no rips, tears, foxing, damp staining or discolorations to the interior, though there is light sunning to the exterior spine. The book block is tight with no loose pages. The original dust jacket is intact and in Good-/Good condition due to spine sunning; some creasing at top of rear jacket; a 1/2" v-shaped chip at top of front jacket; and slight scuffing on the jacket front with a small fold along the bottom.

Provenance

This GREEN HILLS OF AFRICA was an October, 2003
inheritance presented to the Seller from the estate of
an attorney who had been a friend and neighbor.
