BOOK DESCRIPTION

PHOTOGRAPHS FROM THE COLLECTION OF THE GILMAN PAPER COMPANY. Meriden CT and Jacksonville FL: White Oak Press, 1985. Introduction by Pierre Apraxine. Plates by Richard Benson. Forward by Howard Gilman. Notes to the plates by Lee Marks. The letterpress is by the Stamperia Valdonega of Verona, Italy. This is Number 304 of 1200 Limited Edition printings, as indicated on front of slipcase. The book includes 199 gravure full-page tipped-in plates printed in photo-offset lithography on special paper. All of the plates reproduce timeless photographs whose originals are now in the Metropolitan Museum. Of these, nine are process color photos. The frontispiece is after a Fox Talbot original. The photographs chosen for this book span the range of original American, British and French early and modern photography from Daguerre and Talbot to Frank and Arbus. They were reproduced by the use of extremely high-quality photolithography by Richard Benson. Widely regarded as one of the most significant private collections of photography in the twentieth century, the Gilman Collection was assembled over a period of twenty years, growing to eight thousand images. The complete collection was acquired by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2005. This set includes the thick gilt-lettered leather-backed elephant folio (half-calf and cloth) in its original slipcase box. The book contains 480 pages and measures 23.50" x 20.75" in box and 15.5" x 18.0" outside the slipcase. Included with the set are the original pair of silk photo-handling gloves, the Photography in Fine Arts (PFA) Newsletter announcing the book's publication, and an original R. Willard Dean print.  (Library of Congress Catalog Number 85-51168)

CONDITION

The book and slipcase set is in Very Fine/Very Fine condition. The Seller states that the book is solid, tight and clean. There are no bends, scuffs, speckles, marks, rips, tears, damp stains or loose pages to the  book's exterior or interior.

PROVENANCE

The GILMAN PAPER COLLECTION was an inheritance from the estate of the noted Colorado photographer R. Willard Dean, who was the Seller's father-in-law. The Seller states that the late Mr. Dean was the sole photographer in the family and that "I know this book needs to belong to someone who will treasure it as he did."
